Fiber-optic Cables for Optogenetics

A fiber-optic patch cable connects two distant fiber optic ends and uses the same type of fiber and connections as the tips of the respective fibers it connects. In the optogenetics experiments, One end of the fiber-optic patch cable is a connector (FC/PC or SMA) which can be connected to the laser. The other end is a connector or a ferrule or bare fiber. The most popular fiber in optogenetics research is a fiber with 200μm core diameter and NA=0.22. Each patch cable includes two protective caps that shield the ferrule ends from dust and other hazards when not in use.
	Numerical Aperture (NA) defines the angle of the cone of light leaving the fiber tip at the end of the cannula. The 0.22 NA fibers provide a narrower cone of light at the tip, resulting in higher light intensity over a smaller area. The 0.39 NA fibers generate a wider cone of light, illuminating a larger area with lower intensity.
	Fiber Optic Rotary Joint Patch Cable The articulated rotary joint patch cables are a one-piece solution for optogenetics experiments. The built-in rotary joint interface allows the cable to freely rotate, reducing the risk of damage in optogenetics experiments. The permanently attached fiber optics directly connect to the laser on one end, the other end is a connector or a ferrule or bare fiber.
Structure of a patch cord
The core and the cladding are two layers that make up the lightguide. However, the light travels inside the core of the fiber-optic, barely or not inside the cladding. For this reason, interconnected fiber-optics should have the same core diameter. Different cladding diameters have no influence on the coupling efficiency. The buffer is a protective layer that tightly encircles the cladding. For patch cords, we usually recommend the use of another protective layer, called jacket, which is a loose tube covering the previously mentioned layers of the cable.
